Widely known as a serial port of personal computers. Historically was widespread in telecommunications equipment. Currently still used to connect all kinds of specialized or obsolete equipment to computers, however, most are now superseded by the USB interface. RS-232 provides data transfer and some special signaling between the terminal and the communication device at a distance up to 15 meters.
